A extended cruise through the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older lady who was stranded by the ship on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the excursion for a rest. The liner departed without her and came back several hours later after the personnel discovered the passenger was missing.

An extensive search operation located her body the following day.

Officials are looking into the tragedy, together with police and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and crew on the ship were notified that the remainder of the journey had been called off due to the "sad loss and earlier mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he further stated that guests would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the travelers via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an updated announcement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any further travelers from boarding the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its arrival.

Timeline of Incidents

The vessel initially left Cairns on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the time of the senior passenger's death. The tropical location was the opening port on the itinerary.

Guests on the ship - who generally pay tens of thousands of currency to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkelling.

Family Response

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "surprised and saddened that the ship left Lizard Island after an planned excursion without my parent".

Through her comments, she characterized her mother as an "active 80-year-old" who was a member of a walking organization.

"According to scant information we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of care and basic judgment," she stated.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to pinpoint what "the organization should have undertaken that might have saved Mum's life".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm day, and mum took sick on the hill climb," she revealed.

"They requested her to return, alone. Then the boat departed, seemingly without conducting a passenger count.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or soon after, she died, alone."

Company Position

In a statement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "cooperating fully with officials to aid their inquiry".

He said that the firm was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had offered its full support to the relatives.

Shipping Sector Practices

The liner serves up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to company data. It was purpose-built to reach distant areas of the nation's coastline and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to take travelers on day excursions.

Occurrences of this nature are infrequent, and liners have procedures to track which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an option," one expert remarked.

Cruise lines take these processes very seriously and have "advanced technology in place to stop such events from occurring," the authority continued.

"This is presumably a stunning - and tragic - single occurrence."
